POW and Purple Heart Recipient Dies at Age 89

Sidney Victor Manders Sr. started Manders Diesel Repair in Lakeville.

Sidney Victor Manders Sr., of Lakeville, died on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013 at the age of 89.

According to his obituary on White Funeral Homes:

Manders grew up in St. Paul and served in the Air Force during World War II. His plane was shot down three times and on the third time he was imprisoned in Germany. He credited his faith as helping him survive the torture. 

When he returned to the United States he received the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and other awards. After marriage and ownership of a business in St. Paul, Manders started Manders Diesel Repair in Lakeville.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, children, grand children, and other relatives.

His memorial service is Nov. 1 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lakeville. The service will start at 10:30 a.m., with friends and family gathering one hour before the service. He will be buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery
