American Red Cross Blood Drive

Disruptions like the flu season and inclement winter weather can curb donations, as some regular donors are ill and the weather makes it difficult for others to keep blood and platelet donation appointments. The severe winter storm that hit the Northeast has forced the cancellation of 160 Red Cross blood drives in eight states so far, resulting in a shortfall of more than 6,600 units of blood and platelets.

All blood types are needed to help maintain a sufficient blood supply. Currently, there is a more urgent need for types O negative, B negative and A negative, as patients’ needs are outpacing donations at times.
