UPDATE: Heat Advisory for Lakeville, Excessive Heat Warning for Minneapolis, St. Paul

With a forecast high of 98 degrees, the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Lakeville, Dakota County and much of southern Minnesota.

Tuesday update (8:11 a.m.)

Thermometers reached 97 degrees yesterday in Minneapolis, a record high temperature for the day. With temperatures forecast to be even higher today, with even more humidity, the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the entire Twin Cities metro area, including Lakeville, until 8 p.m.

Heat index readings will climb past 105 this afternoon in Lakeville.

There's a chance the Twin Cities could see its first 100 degree reading since July 31, 2006. If we do get that hot, it wouldn't be the earliest 100 degree day ever, that happened on May 31, 1934 when it was 106, according to the NWS.

A HEAT ADVISORY MEANS THAT A PERIOD OF HOT TEMPERATURES IS EXPECTED. THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE POSSIBLE. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS...STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ROOM...STAY OUT OF THE SUN...AND CHECK UP ON RELATIVES AND NEIGHBORS.

And just like that, summer arrives. This past weekend was the first since March, according to the National Weather Service, that it didn't rain or snow at least one day in the Twin Cities.

And the beautiful weekend is ushering in some hot and sticky weather to Lakeville and greater Minnesota.

The NWS is forecasting a high of 93 today for Lakeville and even warmer temperatures on Tuesday. With dew points in the lower 70s, the heat index in Lakeville and around the Twin Cities could approach 105.

That has NWS has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for Hennepin and Ramsey counties.

From the NWS:

AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING MEANS THAT A PROLONGED PERIOD OF DANGEROUSLY HOT TEMPERATURES WILL OCCUR. THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A DANGEROUS SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE LIKELY. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS...STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ROOM...STAY OUT OF THE SUN.

But heat isn't the only risk: the hot and sticky air gives risk for severe weather.

According to the NWS:

A warm front was advancing toward the area today, which will become somewhat stationary into tonight. A chance of thunderstorms continues today... Another disturbance may move in tonight from the Dakotas, which could set off more thunderstorms near the front. This development cold be over parts of central into southern Minnesota. Large hail and damaging winds would be the main threat from these storms. A cold front will move across the region late Tuesday night into Wednesday, bringing with it another chance for thunderstorms and much cooler and drier air to end the week.
