Former Lakeville North Basketball Star Recovering from Knee Surgery

Rachel Banham, captain for the University of Minnesota women's basketball team, underwent successful surgery for patellar tendonitis in both knees earlier this week.

Former Lakeville North High basketball standout and current University of Minnesota star Rachel Banham is recovering from knee surgery.

Golden Gophers head coach Pam Borton announced on Tuesday that Banham, a two-year starting guard for Minnesota, underwent successful surgery for patellar tendonitis in both knees. She is expected to be fully recovered before the start of her junior year.

Banham will be team captain next year.

A two-time letter winner for the Gophers, Banham is coming off a stellar sophomore season. She started all 32 of her team’s games and averaged 20.7 points, 3.9 assists and 1.9 steals per game. Among the honors she earned were WBCA All-America honorable mention, WBCA All-Region 6, All-Big Ten and team most valuable player.

She was named to the Full Court Freshman All-America first team and Big Ten Freshman of the Year during her first season as a Gopher.

Banham signed with Minnesota after finishing an All-American career at Lakeville North, where she was ranked as a top-five point guard in the nation and was named Minnesota’s Miss Basketball during her senior year.
