In Court, Gander Mountain Accuses Cabela's of Cybersquatting
Lawsuit says Cabela's has been illegally sitting on competitor's web addresses, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
One outdoors superstore chain illegally laid online traps to catch a competitor's customers, according to a lawsuit filed Friday in Minneapolis, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported.
Gander Mountain sued Cabela's in federal court under the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, among other laws.
In an article posted online Sunday and updated Tuesday, the newspaper suggested trying the disputed URLs at home: "Type GanderMountainCatalog.com into a web browser. You get Cabela's home page: Cabelas.com. Same for GanderCatalog.com."
Cabela's created the web addresses in 1999 but it was unclear how long the web addresses have directed web surfers to the Cabela's site, the Pioneer Press reported.
As of Wednesday morning, they no longer were—neither address went anywhere. (A Google cache from 10 p.m. Sunday shows the Cabela's site for "GanderMountainCatalog.com.")
Gander Mountain's Twin Cities-area retail store locations include Maple Grove, Lakeville, Eden Prairie, Woodbury, Rogers, Forest Lake and Blaine. Cabela's also has a store in Rogers and is building one in Woodbury.
