Dakota County Library Book Bribe: Kids Earn Waterpark Tickets, iPod Touch for Summer Reading

The library's "Bookawocky" summer reading program offers kids and teens a number of prizes in exchange for books they complete between June and August.

"The big thing about reading is, you have to be in the condition for it. Physical condition, too. This body of mine is a constant distraction. Here I am trying to read, busy reading, yet persistently obliged to put my book aside in order to hit the can, clip my nails, shave, throw up, clean my teeth, brush my rug, [...] take an aspirin, light a cigarette, order more coffee, scratch my ear and look out the window." - Martin Amis, Money

To help surmount the countless distractions knocking at the gates of Sustained Literary Exploration, the Dakota County Library is offering local kids and teens a number of small bribes in recompense for completing the chore of reading.

The "Bookawocky Summer Reading Experience" program is offering children rewards for books read between June 8 and Aug. 17: Zoo memberships, waterpark tickets, an iPod Touch and (with somewhat circular logic) books.

The library has more about the details of the book barter in a press release:

Upon signing up, kids in grade 6 and younger will receive a game card of 12 activities. By completing at least 10 of the activities, they’ll earn a free book. Additionally, for every book they read between June 8 and August 17, kids can write or draw book reviews for a chance to win additional prizes, including a family membership to a local zoo or museum.

When teens entering grades 7–12 sign up, they’ll receive one free ticket to a teen takeover event at Cascade Bay Waterpark in Eagan on Thursday, June 20. Teens will also be eligible to win books, gift cards and an iPod Touch by submitting book reviews through August 17.

Starting in June, children can begin counting their books on the Bookawocky website.
