Sarah Barton, 42, Lakeville resident and mother of two

"I think of my dad's stories of war. He fought in WWII and talked from time to time about the friends he lost fighting. It broke my heart to hear, but it was also fascinating. He passed away a few years ago, and we'll visit him in Fort Snelling."

Dr. Lisa Snyder, superintendent of

"Memorial Day for me is a day to be reflective as we remember all those who have served our country and have lost their lives for our freedom. I especially take time to remember my nephew who served his country and lost his life."

Seth Allen, 19, college student who lives Lakeville

"My family has always made a spectacle of Memorial Day where we go to the lake up north. We grill and tube on the lake and make a huge bonfire. I guess it's our way of remembering those who have sacrificed for us so we can do it."

Matt Little, Lakeville City Council Member

"It's one of the many days I think about the sacrifices my generation has made serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's a day to honor those that have fought for us since the creation of this country. It's a day to realize how great we have it as Americans, and to understand that it's the service of our military men and women that preserve this."

Mark Craig Davidson, 48, Lakeville resident

"Memorial Day is poignant for me because our family lost a great young man in Iraq. My nephew was a bright light and touched so many people. He'll be missed yet remembered fondly on Memorial Day."
