Veterans Day A Time to Offer Thanks, Remember

Lakeville's VFW is offering free burgers for Veterans. Aronson Park's Veterans Memorial offers a solitary place to remember.

At 11:11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 2011, there was one family sitting on some of the limestone rocks that line .

They didn't want to be photographed or named, but the 50-something Lakeville woman who had her two daughters with her, said she took the day off work to visit Lakeville's jewel of the memorial, a .

"My dad just though this was the greatest thing ever," she said of the aircraft which sits at . "He was a WWII veteran, but connected with this place—this plane."

She said her father recently passed away and it was her daughters who thought a good way to remember him and his service was to come to the memorial he loved so much, and pay respects to all those who have served the country over the years.

"They really thought he would have loved to come down here at 11:11 on 11-11-11," she said. "Funny how the numbers work."

Lakeville didn't have any official Veterans Day ceremonies at the Veterans Memorial today, but that wasn't stopping some from visiting.

"Look at it out here," the woman said of the park. "It's a beautiful day—sunny, pretty warm—and it's easy to just sit and think and remember."

Meanwhile, is offering free burgers to Veterans today, and tonight, from 6-9 p.m. at , there will be a Military Appreciation Dinner with Retired Major General Shellito guest speaking.

Tomorrow, from 1:30-3 p.m. at Lakeville's , there will be a Lakeville Yellow Ribbon is partnering with the Heritage Library for a special presentation to honor our local veterans and hear their stories. The program will include presentations from three guest speakers:

  • Jon Malin, father of wounded Lakeville soldier SSG Kyle Malin
  • Terry Branham, Vietnam and Desert Storm veteran
  • Lee Haug, WWII veteran and member of the famous Ghost Army

Finally, seeing that today is Veterans Day, it's a perfect time to thank and remember an important veteran in your life.
