Patch Picks: Earth Day Edition

Make a difference or just enjoy the environment with these Lakeville area celebrations and events.

Each week, Lakeville Patch will run a weekly feature called Patch Picks, highlighting editor and reader picks of great local businesses, destinations, services, organizations, and ways to spend a day off.

If you haven’t yet gotten to take part in area Earth Day events that began last weekend and run through this weekend, you still have time to do your part to help preserve the planet. Since beginning in 1970 as a way to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment, the event has spread globally and evolved in to a week-long celebration that culminates with the official April 22 annual observance.

Lakeville held their official clean-up events on April 16, but close-by events are still running throughout the coming weekend to help you go green.

Red Stag Supper Club - The Minneapolis restaurant was the first in the city to become LEED certified and continues their commitment to conservation by hosting an Earth Day Breakfast. From 8 a.m. to noon on Friday the restaurant will be donating your breakfast tab to the Land Stewardship Project. The LSP is a private non-profit organization that promotes sustainable agriculture. LSP representatives will be on hand to give presentations about their efforts.

Como Zoo The kid-favorite classic will host its annual Party for the Planet from Friday, April 22 through Sunday, April 24. Cats and Kilowatts is the theme for 2011 and special presentations on the zoo’s feline occupants share the event bill along with entertainment offerings and special family activities. Admission to the zoo and conservatory are free, though a suggested donation is welcome.

Harriet Alexander Nature Center The popular Roseville nature park celebrates its Earth Day anniversary with a tree-planting ceremony, arts and crafts activities, family games and special environmental exhibits. The event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23. There is no cost to attend.

Enjoy Lakeville’s ParksWhile not hosting official events, if you want to appreciate and be inspired by our area’s natural environment, there are plenty of opportunities to get out enjoy your surroundings locally. Visit the eagle’s nest at Ritter Farm Park or meander through the winding trails. Strolling around Lake Marion and enjoying the numerous parks that line its shores is another option. Visit the city’s Parks and Recreation website for complete details on all of Lakeville’s outdoor resources and plan your own personal celebration.
