Lakeville's Weekly Calendar: Senior Center, Library

Each week Lakeville's Senior Center and Heritage Library offers programs for Lakeville residents to take part in. Here's a list of upcoming events.

Heritage Library Programs

Storytime for 2s & 3s

Children ages 2 & 3 and their parents/caregivers and siblings are invited to enjoy half-hour storytime programs at the Dakota County Heritage Library in Lakeville on Wednesdays, October 5, 12, 19, & 26, 10:30 – 11:00 a.m.  Stories, songs, rhymes and activities chosen specifically for this energetic age group will be shared each week.

Storytime for 4s, 5s & 6s

Children ages 4, 5, & 6 are invited to enjoy half-hour storytime programs at the Dakota County Heritage Library in Lakeville on Wednesdays, October 5, 12, 19, & 26, 11:30 a.m.- noon.  Stories, songs and activities that build preschool literacy skills will be included each week.  Parents/caregivers and younger siblings may attend.

Los Patitos Spanish Club Spanish Storytime

Children ages 2 – 6 and their parents or caregivers are invited to enjoy programs of stories, songs, and activities in Spanish and English presented by Susan Niz of Los Patitos Spanish Club at the Dakota County Heritage Library in Lakeville on Fridays, October 7, 14, 21, & 28 10:30 – 11:00 a.m.  No prior knowledge of Spanish is necessary.

Baby Storytime

Babies up to 24 months of age and their caregivers are invited to participate in a special program of stories, songs and activities for the youngest listeners at the Dakota County Heritage Library in Lakeville on Monday, October 10, 2011 at 10:30 a.m.  Older siblings are welcome to attend. The twenty minute program will be followed by open playtime with age-appropriate toys.

Model Magic Coil Baskets with Abrakadoodle

Children ages 3 – 10 are invited to register for a hands-on model magic art sculpting class at the Dakota County Heritage Library in Lakeville on Tuesday, October 11, 4-4:45 p.m.  To register visit the Library’s website at www.dakotacounty.us/library/  and click on events calendar or call the library at (952) 891-0360.

Lakeville Senior Center Programs

Laugh Often, Love Much, Live Strong - Sunday, October 16, 1-3 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Lakeville

Let’s be proud of those wrinkles! Mark Twain said that they simply show where the smiles have been! What gray hairs? Those are just the sparkles that make us shine! This hilarious look at life will have you laughing one minute and standing up and cheering the next!

Agatha Christie said, “I have enjoyed greatly the second blooming… suddenly you find - at the age of 50, say - that a whole new life has opened before you.” Motivational speaker Gaye Hanson will share ways to laugh more, love more and age powerfully! Become stronger than ever by learning to laugh, serve, love and grow! It’s time for our “second blooming!”

This free program is open to all mature adults 40 and older, and will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 20165 Heath Ave., Lakeville. Door prizes and refreshments will be offered. Sponsored by Lakeville Senior Resource Coalition, whose member organizations serve seniors and whose mission is to educate the community by promoting discussion of issues and resources that affect the body, mind and spirit of our aging population. Coalition members include: Lakeville Area Community Education, Lakeville Senior Center, Highview Hills Senior Living Community, Parish Nurse Ministry - St. John’s Lutheran Church, and Dakota County Heritage Library.

Jewelry-Marking Class (Beading) - Tuesday, October 18, 10:15 a.m.

The instructor bring 85 pounds of gemstones, crystals, fresh-water pearls and assorted glass and wood beads to the class at the Lakeville Senior Center - all the supplies needed to make lots of pretty gifts! The instructor starts and ends all projects and will help you pick great combinations of beads. She will have samples of all the projects that will be made in the class. No charge for the class, you just pay for what you make; prices range from $5 to $20. Class limit is 12 students; class length is 90 minutes. Sign up at the Senior Center by October 11.

IFall Belgian Waffle Breakfast

The Lakeville Senior Center will host its fall Belgian Waffle Breakfast on Sunday, October 9 from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Mark your calendars and invite your family and friends! Cost is $7.00 for adults, $5.00 for children ages 6-12 years and free for 5 and under. Menu includes all-you-can-eat waffles, sausage, orange juice and coffee. Take-out will be available.

Tickets are available at the Senior Center Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through October 7; tickets are also available at the door. All proceeds benefit the Lakeville Senior Center; funds raised will be supplemented by Southern Dakota County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Also for sale at the waffle breakfast are Metro Dining Cards at $22 per set and Country Joe Foods Pizzas at $12 each. The Senior Center is located at 20732 Holt Ave., Lakeville. Health Insurance Counseling

Health insurance counseling to Medicare beneficiaries will be provided by state-certified Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging staff or volunteers, free of charge, at the Lakeville Senior Center on certain Mondays of each month from 9 a.m.-noon (next session is on October 10.) Counselors will assist with the basics of Medicare and Medical Assistance, choosing a supplement and/or a Part D plan, processing of claims, assisting with forms, and more. To make a one-hour appointment, call the Center at 952-985-4622.

Diner's Club - Thursday, October 13

Do you enjoy eating out, but hate to eat alone? Then, join the Lakeville Senior Center’s Diner’s Club! Both singles and couples are invited. Our next get-together will be at Casa Nostra in Lakeville. Meet at the restaurant on October 13 at 5:00 p.m. Sign up by October 11 so reservations can be made.

TROLLEY RIDE TO APPLEWOOD ORCHARD - WED., OCT. 12, 12:30 PM

The best-kept secret in town is that Schmitty & Sons has a trolley! As an introduction to their new trolley, they have volunteered to take us to the orchard, free of charge! Once arriving at the orchard you will have the opportunity to:

• take a hayride through the orchard for $1
• watch them make cider for free
• go through the hedge/maze for $5
• enjoy pie and beverage for $3
• purchase apples (Honeycrisp - $2.39/lb., other varieties - $1.49/lb.)

Leave the Senior Center at 12:30 p.m. and return at 3:30 p.m. Deadline for sign up is October 7.

Hearing Tests

Jayne Bongers from Advantage Care Hearing will be at the Lakeville Senior Center on the second Wednesday of each month to conduct hearing checks, this month on October 12 from 1-3 p.m. Besides the hearing checks, she will do behind-the-ear hearing aid re-tubing for the nominal price of $3, hearing aid cleaning, and batteries will be available for purchase. Coffee Lecture at the Lakeville Senior Center

October 14, 10 a.m. - The Lincoln Assassination - “A Fragile Time”
Presented by David Jones, a native of St. Peter, MN and a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College. When John Wilkes Booth assassinated Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War was ending and emotions were high.
Killing the President was just part of Booth’s plan. Join us to explore this fragile time in our history and the plot that very nearly succeeded in toppling the government. Cost is $5.00; sign up with payment by October
