Lakeville's Weekly Calendar: Senior Center, Library

Each week Lakeville's Senior Center and Heritage Library offers programs for Lakeville residents to take part in. Here's a list of upcoming events.

Heritage Library Programs

Library Orientation for Homeschool Families

Families who homeschool are invited to a special program at the Dakota County Heritage Library in Lakeville on Tuesday, September 6, 2011, 1:30-3:00 p.m.  We will share an all-ages storytime at 1:30, demonstrate library databases and electronic resources at 2:00, and end with a tour and scavenger hunt at 2:30.  Discover all the library resources available to support your homeschool program!

Storytime for 2s & 3s

Children ages 2 & 3 and their parents/caregivers and siblings are invited to enjoy half-hour storytime programs at the Dakota County Heritage Library in Lakeville on Wednesdays, September 7, 14, 21, & 28, 10:30 – 11:00 a.m.  Stories, songs, rhymes and activities chosen specifically for this energetic age group will be shared each week.

Storytime for 4s, 5s, & 6s

Children ages 4, 5, & 6 are invited to enjoy half-hour storytime programs at the Dakota County Heritage Library in Lakeville on Wednesdays, September 7, 14, 21, & 28, 11:30 a.m.- noon.  Stories, songs and activities that build preschool literacy skills will be included each week.  Parents/caregivers and younger siblings may attend.

Madeline Stories & Movies

Children ages 2 – 6 and their parents or caregivers are invited to enjoy a programs of stories, movies and activities based on Ludwig Bemelman’s Madeline stories at the Dakota County Heritage Library in Lakeville on Friday, September 9 at 10:30 a.m.

Lakeville Senior Center Programs

Tops on Riding the Light Rail - Friday, September 16 at 10 a.m.

Tony Elia, a Customer Advocate with Metro Transit, will be at the Lakeville Senior Center to give a presentation on how to commute with confidence. You will see how easy it is to ride Metro Transit’s Hiawatha Light Rail Line. Topics to be discussed are:

• Using the online Trip Planner
• Paying your fare
• Accessibility
• Safety and Security
• Transit Information Center
• Customer Relations and Lost & Found

Each participant will receive a free ride coupon, good for 2½ hours of riding. If you plan to attend, sign up by Sept. 13.

Health Insurance Counseling

Health insurance counseling to Medicare beneficiaries will be provided by state-certified Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging staff or volunteers, free of charge, at the Lakeville Senior Center on certain Mondays of each month from 9 a.m.-noon (next session is on Sept. 12.) Counselors will assist with the basics of Medicare and Medical Assistance, choosing a supplement and/or a Part D plan, processing of claims, assisting with forms, and more. To make a one-hour appointment, call the Center at 952-985-4622.

Creative Writing Classes at the Lakeville Senior Center

Senior Center member Rosemary Matos will conduct these classes every Friday at 10 a.m., for eight weeks, beginning September 16. The cost is $10 for all eight weeks, payable to City of Lakeville; sign up
with payment by Sept. 12. For more information, call the Senior Center at 952-985-4622.

Book Club with Murray

The Lakeville Senior Center’s book club will meet on Tues., Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. to discuss March, by Geraldine Brooks. This group is led by Lakeville Heritage Library’s head librarian, Murray Wilson. New members are welcome.

Turtle Lake Casino "Nifty Fifty Day" - Wednesday, September 21

Leave the Lakeville Senior Center at 8:15 a.m. and return at approximately 4:15 p.m. This is “Nifty Fifty Day” - all passengers over age 50 will receive $10 in quarters at the casino. Cost of the trip is $5, payable to City of Lakeville. This fee is non-refundable after the deadline of Sept. 13.

Hearing Tests

Jayne Bongers from Advantage Care Hearing will be at the Lakeville Senior Center on the second Wednesday of each month to conduct hearing checks, this month on September 14 from 1-3 p.m. Besides the hearing checks, she will do behind-the-ear hearing aid re-tubing for the nominal price of $3, hearing aid cleaning, and batteries will be available for purchase. Commonweal Theater - Friday, October 7

Travel by motor coach to the tiny village of Lanesboro, MN where you will enjoy the matinee performance of “To Kill a Mockingbird” at the Commonweal Theater. You will sit in the 200-seat auditorium featuring
seats reclaimed from the original Guthrie Theater. After the production, enjoy lunch at Pedal Pusher’s Café. On the menu is roast pork loin with all the trimmings. After lunch, shop along the streets of historic Lanesboro. Stop at Preston Apple Orchard on the way home. Leave the Lakeville Senior Center at 7:30 a.m. and return at 5:00 p.m. Cost is $68, payable by Sept. 16.

Singles Group

The Lakeville Single Seniors group is looking for men and women who want to be active. We meet monthly for happy hours, cruises, bird watching, plays or whatever is of interest to the members. We have good discussions at our happy hours, which are held the first and third Saturday of each month. Check us out by coming to our monthly committee meeting on the third Thursday of each month at 9:30 a.m. at the Lakeville Senior Center. Sep. 17, 4-6 pm Saturday Happy Hour, at Harry’s Café, 20790 Keokuk Ave., Lakeville.
