Lakeville's Calendars: Senior Center, Library

Each week Lakeville's Senior Center and Heritage Library offers programs for Lakeville residents to take part in. Here's a list of upcoming events.

Heritage Library Programs

Library Orientation for Homeschool Families

Families who homeschool are invited to a special program at the Dakota County Heritage Library in Lakeville on Tuesday, September 6, 2011, 1:30-3:00 p.m.  We will share an all-ages storytime at 1:30, demonstrate library databases and electronic resources at 2:00, and end with a tour and scavenger hunt at 2:30.  Discover all the library resources available to support your homeschool program!

Storytime for 2s & 3s

Children ages 2 & 3 and their parents/caregivers and siblings are invited to enjoy half-hour storytime programs at the Dakota County Heritage Library in Lakeville on Wednesdays, September 7, 14, 21, & 28, 10:30 – 11:00 a.m.  Stories, songs, rhymes and activities chosen specifically for this energetic age group will be shared each week.

Storytime for 4s, 5s, & 6s

Children ages 4, 5, & 6 are invited to enjoy half-hour storytime programs at the Dakota County Heritage Library in Lakeville on Wednesdays, September 7, 14, 21, & 28, 11:30 a.m.- noon.  Stories, songs and activities that build preschool literacy skills will be included each week.  Parents/caregivers and younger siblings may attend.

Madeline Stories & Movies

Children ages 2 – 6 and their parents or caregivers are invited to enjoy a programs of stories, movies and activities based on Ludwig Bemelman’s Madeline stories at the Dakota County Heritage Library in Lakeville on Friday, September 9 at 10:30 a.m.

Lakeville Senior Center Programs

Life Line Screening - Tuesday, September 6

Life Line Screening, the nation’s leading provider of community-based preventive health screening, will host their affordable, non-invasive, painless health screenings on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at the Lakeville Senior Center.  Life Line Screening uses painless, accurate ultrasound screenings that can help save your life.  These screenings are recommended for anyone 50 and older, or 40 and over with cardiovascular risk factors.  The results, which are mailed directly to you, will help you and your doctor protect your health.  Screenings to be offered are: stroke/carotid artery screening ($60), heart rhythm screening ($60), abdominal aortic aneurysm screening ($60), peripheral arterial disease screening ($60), and osteoporosis risk assessment ($35).  Get all 5 screenings for only $149, a savings of $126.  Pre-registration is required; call 1-800-324-1851 to schedule your appointment.

Lakeville Senior Center's Motorcycle Club

Rides are scheduled on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month.  On Sept. 8, meet at the Senior Center at 9 a.m. and depart at 9:30 a.m. for a long ride to Mapleton, MN.  On Sept. 22, meet at the Senior Center at 10:30 a.m. and depart at 11 a.m. for a short ride to Stillwater, where we will have lunch at Meister’s.  For more information on the motorcycle club and how to become a Senior Center member, call 952-985-4622. 

Diner’s Club - Thursday, September 8

Do you enjoy eating out, but hate to eat alone?  Then, join the Lakeville Senior Center’s Diner’s Club!  Both singles and couples are invited.  Our next get-together will be at Rudy’s Redeye Grill in Lakeville.  Meet at the restaurant on September 8 at 5:00 p.m.  Sign up by Sept. 6 so reservations can be made.

Minnesota Twins Trip - Tuesday, September 20

Join us to see the Minnesota Twins play the Seattle Mariners.  The game starts at 7:10 p.m.  A bus will leave the Lakeville Senior Center at 5 p.m. and will arrive at Target Field in plenty of time to watch batting practice, get autographs and explore the ballpark.   Cost is $30.00.  The seats are reserved on the upper level, with minimal stairs.  You may invite your kids or grandkids to come to the game with you.  Sign up with payment by Sept. 6.

Chair Massages – September 7

Chair massage appointments are available at the Lakeville Senior Center between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Sept. 7.  The charge is $10 for a 15-minute appointment; please pay when you sign up.  We must take appointments consecutively, beginning at 10 a.m.  You must cancel your appointment 24 hours in advance or you will be charged. 

Beginners Watercolor Class

If you have always wanted to learn how to watercolor paint by never found the right opportunity to try it, look no further than the Lakeville Senior Center on Thursday, Sept. 8 from 9:30-11:30 a.m.  No fee for the class, and no materials to buy, but the class is limited to Senior Center members. Register by Sept. 6.

Downtown Lakeville Walking Tour – September 14 at 10:00 a.m.

What do you know about Lakeville?  Did you know that the Winsor Senior Apartment site was formerly home to a flour mill?  Do you know what downtown building was a combination fire hall/village hall/jail cell?  Where the movie theater or the hotel was located?  The Lakeville Area Historical Society has pieced together downtown Lakeville’s fascinating past and would love to take you on a guided walking tour.  Come be intrigued by the history, or share some of your downtown Lakeville memories.  The tour is free and will last about one hour.  Comfortable shoes are a must.  Meet at the Senior Center at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14.  At the end of the tour, we’ll stop for a small ice cream cone at Dairy Delight for the discount price of $1.25 (on own.)  Flavors are chocolate, vanilla, or twist.  Sign up at the Senior Center by September 8.  Call 952-985-4622 for more information.

Zentangle Art Class - September 15, 9 am-noon

Certified Zentangle instructor, Nancy Pinke, will be at the Lakeville Senior Center on Thurs., Sept. 15 from 9 am to noon.  The cost is $25, plus $10 for supplies (6 paper tiles, a micron pen, a pencil and shading stub, all nestled in a nice box - everything you need to start a new hobby!)  Sign up by Sept. 8.  Zentangle is art created by repetitive pattern strokes; unlike most art, there is no need to plan because you won’t know what your Zentangle will look like until it is finished.  Learn more about Zentangle art at www.zentangle.com.

Light Rail & Guthrie Theater - Wednesday, October 5

Take a motorcoach from the Lakeville Senior Center to board the light rail at the 28th Ave. and 82nd St. terminal in Bloomington.  Sit back and relax as you ride between the Mall of America and downtown Minneapolis.  From the terminal at 5th St. and Hennepin Ave., a motorcoach will take you to the Guthrie Theater for a 45-minute behind-the-scenes walking tour.  After the tour, you will have the opportunity to view the Endless Bridge and visit the Guthrie gift store.  Then, have lunch at one of the Guthrie Restaurants.  Leave the Center at 9:15 a.m. and return at 2:15 p.m.  Cost is $49, payable by Sept. 9. 

Free Yoga Classes

Free yoga classes will be held at the Lakeville Senior Center from 8:15-9:15 a.m. on Fridays, beginning Sept. 16; sign up by Sept. 9.  Come for an hour of gentle, flowing yoga.  No experience necessary.  Participants will stretch, balance and relax through a series of yoga poses.  Bring an exercise mat and a small blanket.  A freewill donation of $1-$3 per person per class will be used to purchase yoga blocks, straps and other props to be used during class.  These props will be part of the fitness room equipment in the new senior center.

Heart Restart CPR Program – September 13 at 10 a.m.

Learn how to do CPR in 30 short minutes!  A free CPR class will be held at the Lakeville Senior Center on May 10 at 10 a.m.  You watch a DVD and practice on a manikin along with the DVD.  Very simple and there are no intimidating tests.  There will also be a review of how to use an AED (automated external defibrillator.)  Sign up by Sept. 9.
