Lakeville Misses Brunt of Snowfall

More than a foot of snow fell in parts of southern Minnesota. Schools were closed Thursday in Northfield.

Call it a near miss.

Lakeville missed the brunt of the late spring snowstorm that dropped more than a foot of snow south of the Twin Cities metro area Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service reported that 18 inches of snow fell in Bloomington Prairie and 15.5 inches piled up in Owatonna.

Closer to home, 6.8 inches were recorded in Northfield, and 8.3 inches were reported five miles south of Farmington.

In Northfield, schools were closed Thursday, the second snow day in that district within the past two weeks. Hundreds of residents also were left without power.

The winter storm warning issued for Lakeville and the rest of Dakota County on Wednesday expired earlier today. 

Chilly temperatures will linger in Lakeville for a couple days longer, according to the weather service.

Here is the text of the forecast for the next few days from the weather service:

THIS AFTERNOON: Cloudy, with a high near 41. North wind 10 to 15 mph.
TONIGHT: A 30 percent chance of snow, mainly after 1am. Cloudy, with a low around 31. North wind around 10 mph.

FRIDAY: Snow likely before 1pm, then rain. High near 40. North wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Rain. Low around 33. North northeast wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

SATURDAY: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 46. North northeast wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

SATURDAY NIGHT: A 40 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a low around 38. North northeast wind 5 to 10 mph.

SUNDAY: A 30 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 56. North northeast wind around 5 mph.

SUNDAY NIGHT: A 20 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 42. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny, with a high near 65. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph.
