Halloween Safety Tips from Lakeville Police Department

Drivers are reminded to drive carefully and to watch out for trick-or-treaters.

Interim Lakeville Police Chief Sgt. John Kornmann highlighted a few Halloween tips for Lakeville residents to keep in mind as they go trick-or-treating on Thursday.

"The unwritten rule is if the house is dark, they don't want trick-or treaters or they're not home," Kornmann said.

If a block has a large number of homes without their lights on, it might be getting too late for trick-or-treating, he added.

Parents should examine the candy their children receive to check for candy that is in an open package or just doesn't look right. They candy could be fine, but it's a good precaution to take, said Kornmann.

He also reminded drivers to be aware that more people are out and to make sure they drive carefully. He also suggested that parents bring flashlights to help make it easier for drivers to see the trick-or-treaters.

On Halloween, there may be those who damage Halloween decorations and commit other acts of vandalism. Kornmann asked residents to report vandalism and unsafe drivers to police. People who commit vandalism may drive fast and unsafely as they leave the scene, Kornmann explained.

More Halloween Safety Tips

Centers for Disease Control lists a number of Halloween safety tips on its website. The list includes:

  • Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult.
  • Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible.
  • Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent possible skin and eye irritation.
  • Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes.
